Member Groups > Stevenage Choral Society
Details:
There have been music societies in Stevenage for 60
years or more, but the present Society has a history
dating from 1948. The Society has presented concerts,
both by its own choral and orchestral groups, and by
professional performers. For many years the President
was the late Elizabeth Poston, the composer who lived
at Rooks Nest in Stevenage. Our immediate past President
was the Australian composer, Malcolm Williamson AO CBE,
who until his recent death was also Master of the Queen's
Music.
The Chorus was formed in 1967 as a large scale mixed
voice choir, mainly to perform choral works from the
classical repertoire. The Chorus has never had less
than 40 members, and at times membership has been as
high as 120. Current membership is around 75.
The Chorus performs with both amateur and professional
soloists. Recent performances have included Poulenc's
Gloria, Winter Bird by Douglas Coombes, The Creation
by Haydn, Handel's Messiah, Fauré's Requiem,
A German Requiem by Brahms, Stainer's Crucifixion, Elijah
by Mendelssohn, Bach's St. Matthew Passion, and Bruckner's
Mass in E minor. In October 1993 the Chorus was very
honoured to have been given the opportunity to perform
the World Premiere of a Mass by Douglas Coombes. They
have also participated in two concerts in the Royal
Albert Hall in London, together with 14 other Hertfordshire
Choirs, performing Britten's War Requiem in 1994, and
Mahler's Symphony No. 8 in 1999.
If you would like to come along to our rehearsals,
we would love to see you - they take place every Monday
in School Term Time at 7.45pm in the Leys School, Ripon
Road, Stevenage - all voices welcome!
